Networking Concepts Course
Creating a Foundational Course in Computer Networking That Would Teach Foundations and Prepare for Industry Certifications
Methodist University was developing a Digital Forensics & Cyber Security program to introduce students to core concepts in cybersecurity and digital investigation. While the Networking Concepts course had a name and a high-level overview, there was no structured curriculum, no defined learning path, and no supporting technology environment for instructors to rely on.
The expectation went beyond simply introducing networking concepts. The course needed to prepare students for real-world roles while aligning with industry certification expectations. At the same time, there was no functional infrastructure in place—only standalone computers—leaving the entire instructional experience, from design to delivery, undefined.
The course was designed around a business-driven scenario to bridge the gap between theory and real-world application. Instead of relying on prebuilt environments, the experience was engineered so the network itself had to be designed, justified, and built from the ground up before it could be used.
Before any content was built, the focus was on defining what the network needed to accomplish from a business perspective. Certification exam objectives were reviewed and mapped to identify key skill areas, while industry expectations informed additional competencies. A business use case centered on a fictitious engineering company was developed to anchor all decisions, requiring infrastructure planning, budgeting, and justification before any implementation. This ensured the course followed a clear, outcome-driven path aligned to real-world expectations.
The course was structured to move from physical network construction to system configuration and operational readiness. Content was organized around the full lifecycle of building a working network, including cabling, hardware setup, operating system installation, access configuration, and resource management. A sequence of technical activities was developed to guide network setup, system integration, and performance validation using industry tools and commands. Assignments and assessments were aligned to these activities, requiring justification of decisions and reinforcing application within the defined business context.
The course was deployed by transforming a basic hardware environment into a fully functional, hands-on networking lab. Physical infrastructure—including routers, switches, cabling, and servers—was introduced and configured to support consistent delivery. Students operated within the defined business scenario, following structured requirements for building, testing, and validating network functionality. Delivery expectations were standardized through project-based milestones, ensuring the course could be executed consistently while reinforcing both technical execution and decision-making.
The result was a fully operational networking environment that served as the foundation for the broader Digital Forensics & Cyber Security program. This environment supported hands-on learning across multiple courses and created a consistent infrastructure for applied technical training.
The course established a true build-first experience, where foundational networking concepts were not only understood, but implemented and validated in a working system. This approach ensured that learners developed both technical capability and the ability to justify decisions within a business context.
It is rare to find an instructor who combines deep technical expertise with the ability to deliver truly hands-on, experiential training. In an environment with limited resources, she designed and built physical labs using real hardware and cabling, ensuring we didn’t just understand networking—we experienced it. Her approach transformed complex, often dry material into something practical, engaging, and memorable. Beyond technical skills, her instruction shaped how I think and ultimately influenced my decision to become an instructor myself. Her training doesn’t just transfer knowledge—it builds capability and confidence.
